Leadership Skills Pillar: Public Speaking
Public Speaking in the Context of an Interview

Course Introduction

Universities conduct group interviews for HKDSE candidates who are likely to meet the admission standards under the new 4-year Undergraduate Curriculum. Hong Kong Baptist University states that interview performance counts 20% of the admission criteria.

Interviews are one of the key applications of public speaking. Interview skills have become an essential leadership skill for all young people. Techniques of packaging and presenting oneself through public speaking are crucial to success. Mr Talis WONG, an experienced coach in public speaking, is going to conduct interactive workshops on public speaking and presentation techniques for interviews. With more practice, young people will be better prepared with self introductions, and handle impromptu questions and provide feedback.

Mr Talis WONG

Professional Trainer, Certified Global NLP Trainer

Mr Talis WONG is a Certified Global NLP (neuro-linguistics programming) trainer, a Distinguished Toastmaster (Toastmasters International is an organization focused on communication and leadership training), and the district trainer of Toastmasters International. He specializes in the training and coaching of NLP business applications, communication skills, and personal management and development using NLP and hypnosis. He has conducted training sessions for corporations, universities, professional institutions, and other organisations.
 

Mr WONG has also been a modulator, facilitator, and master of ceremonies for conferences, events, and various organisational functions.  He was one of the trainers and judges for the 2005 and 2006 Hong Kong Master of Ceremonies Contest organized by the Hong Kong Jaycettes. He was a guest speaker trainer for the 2008 Distinguished Salesperson Award (DSA) Contest organised by the Hong Kong Management Association, and seven-times trainer of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest (2006-2012). He is the founder and director of his own training center, the DD Centre.

Interview Skills in a Nutshell

Course Introduction

Interviews are one of the key applications of public speaking: those conducted in English are basic requirements for admissions into universities. Under the new 4-year Undergraduate Curriculum, universities in Hong Kong conduct English interviews with a large number of HKDSE candidates.


According to Ms Jennifer MA, founder of the ARCH Academy, Hong Kong students are often able to memorise facts and reference model answers at interviews. However, students need to develop more spontaneity by learning to structure and present their thoughts effectively. To this end, Jennifer, an experienced university admission counsellor, is going to conduct a series of interactive workshops on thinking and organisation skills, individual and group interview skills, and exploration of global issues. By participating in English mock interviews and receiving continuous feedback, young people will be better equipped with the requisite interview skills for admission to universities.

Ms Jennifer Ma
Co-founder, ARCH Academy

Ms Jennifer MA attended St. Paul's Coeducational College and Benenden School in the UK. She was awarded multiple collection prizes during her studies at the University of Oxford and graduated with First-Class Honors in Economics and Management (B.A., Hon M.A.). Jennifer was also the elected president of the then second-largest student-run society, the Guild.

 


Throughout her career as an industry analyst at Merrill Lynch Investment Banking and later as Investment Professional at Goldman Sachs, Jennifer was involved in the Benenden School Trust and the the China Oxford Scholarship Foundation. These organisations recruit and fund able scholars from China and Hong Kong to further their studies in the UK.

Jennifer was inspired in 2009 to co-establish the ARCH Academy and earned her Master’s degree in Education at The University of Hong Kong. She incorporates theories in her practice and has been teaching the flagship “Thinking Skills” programme both at the ARCH Learning Center and in schools. At ARCH, Jennifer is responsible for enrichment programme curriculum development.. She has delivered workshops of all scales to more than 500 students in her first year of teaching. Beyond enrichment programmes, she delivers tailored consultation sessions and has achieved an impressive track record in helping students attain Oxbridge and professional job offers.

Debating Skills Workshop with Logical Thinking, Speaking Skills and Creativity Training

Course Introduction

This new curriculum framework aims to nurture students to respect the pluralism of cultures and views, and to be critical, reflective and independent thinkers.

One of the key applications of public speaking is engaging in debate. Logical thinking, speaking skills, and critical-thinking skills are essential leadership skills for all young people. Mr. Hayson LIU, an experienced coach and consultant in debating, is going to conduct interactive workshops on all of these debate skills. Through constant practice and competition reviews, young people will become equipped with thorough understanding of developing arguments, using evidence, rebuttal techniques, and manners of debate. Moreover, Hayson will accompany students to the Secondary School Debating Competition Final, where they may have chance to interact with distinguished debaters and professional adjudicators.

Lecturer, School of Chinese, The University of Hong Kong

Mr Hayson LIU is currently a lecturer in the School of Chinese at The University of Hong Kong, instructor of Debating Education of Education Bureau, and advisor of Debating Program of Lingnan University. Hayson is enthusiastic in Chinese debating, and has extensive experience in debate coaching and consultation. He was the member and manager of Debating Team of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), as well as the founding President of the Debate Society of CUHK.

 

Besides, he was the consultant of the Debate Society of CUHK, consultant of New Territories Joint School Debating Association, lecturer of Department of Education Studies of Hong Kong Baptist University, consultant of SCOLAR Debating Education Programme of Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), and debate coach of various secondary schools.

Be a World Champion of English Public Speaking

Course Introduction

English is an international language, and fluency in it is one of the keys to success in the world today. Young people who strive to compete and excel in the global arena must learn how to communicate in English with confidence. As their fluency improves, the opportunities afforded to them widen. Therefore, English public-speaking skills are essential for young leaders. With the aim to enhance techniques and skills in English public speaking, Dr. Ngai-fun LIU, who teaches public speaking and communication at a local university, is going to deliver a workshop series with Mr. Kwong-yue YANG, the 2011 International Speech Contest first runner-up. Through this interactive workshop, young people will experience a great enhancement to their English public-speaking skills.

Mr Kwong-yue YANG
2011 World Championship of Public Speaking First Runner-up

Mr. Kwong-yue YANG was the 2011 World Championship of Public Speaking first runner-up and in so doing became the first representative in Asia to achieve such an honour.

He advises individuals and organisations on how to enhance communication and presentation skills across culturally diverse audiences.

 

He has worked with multinational companies, small-to-medium enterprises, and Internet start-ups. Kwong has three years of experience in Australia and six years in China, thus he has a strong understanding of what is needed to bridge the gap in cross-cultural communications. 

Being a Chinese Australian and having lived in several different countries, Kwong believes that cultural communication is a skill that every speaker should have. Everyone has an amazing message to share with the world, and it is just a matter of using the right communication tools to deliver it in a memorable and effective way.

Dr LIU Ngar-fun
Part-time Instructor, English Language Teaching Unit; Guest Lecturer, The Asia-Pacific Institute of Business, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Dr. Ngar-fun LIU enjoys studying and has fulfilled one of her childhood dreams: completing five degrees (Sociology, Urban design, Education, Applied Linguistics, and Law).

 

She taught English at secondary and university levels in Spain, England, and Hong Kong in the first half of her career. With the aid of two scholarships, she earned a doctoral degree (PhD) in applied linguistics during the latter half of her career. Some of her publications focus on intercultural issues in education, learning, and assessment.
After completing a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution, she was accredited as a mediator by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC). Since 2010, she has practiced as a mediator and mediation coach. She has also combined her dispute resolution and language skills to provide training in intercultural communication, conflict management, and public speaking.

She has volunteered for a number of organisations and has been the vice chairperson of the Hong Kong Federation of Women’s Centres (HKFWC), a 30-year-old independent NGO that has acquired Special Consultative Status from the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. She is also one of the adjudicates for the semi-final of the 2012 Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest. She enjoys travelling, since it takes her slightly out of her comfort zone, and has journeyed to more than 40 countries.

Power of Digital Storytelling

Course Introduction

In addition to voice, words, and graphics, digital storytelling is one of the very popular techniques that young leaders of today should acquire. Images and sounds allow messages to be communicated, shared, and recorded. With the rapid growth of the Internet and social media platforms, this new communication technique allows individuals to share life stories that are easily accessed by everyone in the world. Mr. Edgar SO, experienced journalist and producer, is going to use images, video, sound, animation, and words to facilitate young people’s creative presentation of ideas. Focusing on both theory and hands-on application, young people will be inspired with more possibilities and channels for expression and communication.

Mr Edgar SO has been practising journalism for over 20 years, specialising in television broadcasting and documentary production. He is currently the Head of Programming at the i-Cable News Limited.

 

Mr. Edgar SO has been practising journalism for over 20 years, specialising in television broadcasting and documentary production. He is currently the Head of Programming at the i-Cable News Limited.
Edgar was awarded the first “CUHK Journalism Award” in 2003 for his outstanding work and contribution to the industry. Over the years, the many television programmes he produced about social and political issues in Hong Kong and China, as well as international affairs, earned him numerous local and international awards: US George Foster Peabody Award, the Chicago International Film and TV Festival Award, the New York International Film and TV Festival Award, the Aurora Award, the Telly Award, and the Asian Television Award. After the 911 terrorist attacks on the US in 2001, he was among the first batch of Hong Kong journalists to travel to Iraq, Pakistan, and Jordan to cover the aftermath of the incident.

In recognition of his achievement and contribution, Edgar was granted the British Chevening Scholarship in 2000, with which he spent a year at the University of Oxford as a Reuter Research Fellow. He has also been teaching journalism at universities on a part-time basis since 2003, focusing on television news production and investigative reporting.

Leadership Skills Pillar: Learning 2.0
"5,000 Years of Adventure" From Travelling to Human History

Course Introduction

Mr. James HONG embodies the Chinese proverb stating, “Reading ten thousand books is not as useful as traveling ten thousand miles.” Today, young leaders should acquire global insight. James has travelled to over 70 countries and over half of the planet. He seeks to encourage young people to travel through human history and culture. Calling on personal experiences, James will integrate a travelogue of history, politics, religion, and economics. Through this course, young people will be exposed to several journeys: the origin of human culture, birth of religions, the rise and fall of the Middle Ages, geographical discoveries, and modern history.

Course Content

- Origins of human culture: A reflection of four ancient civilisations and six civilisations (including the Aegean Sea and Olmeca)
- Birth of religions: The discovery of Israel (Christianity and Judaism), India (Hinduism and Buddhism), and the Middle East (Islam)
- The rise and fall of the Middle Ages: From the Middle Ages, Dark Ages, and the New Worlds (Maya and Inca Civilisations) to the prosperity of China
- Geographical discoveries: From the development of the East and West and globalisation, to the rise of Spain, Portugal, and nation states in Europe
- Modern history: An exploration of Japanese Westernization and Western Colonialism in Asia, Africa, and America

Mr James Hong
Director & General Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong/ Travel Writer and Columnist

Mr James Hong migrated to Hong Kong when he was 16, later graduated from Faculty of Arts, The University of Hong Kong and Faculty of Social Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

 

James started working in the Marketing Division of Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong (SCEH) since 1998. During these 14 years, He has initiated various remarkable events, such as “Asia Game Show” and “Tin Shui Wai Recruitment Campaign”. James has been promoted as the first-ever Chinese Director of SCEH since 2011, and has received many distinguished awards, including “HKMA/TVB Distinguished Marketer Award”, and “Person of the Year” from Entertainment Expo Hong Kong.

James is also a travel expert who has travelled over 70 countries. He contributes columns on some major newspapers including The Sun, Headline Daily and Sky Post.
